Spring Notes

April 12, 2025

All the joys of spring are alive and well in this corner of Cornwall. Just a few weeks since our last newsletter, but so much has happened since.

March’s dry easterly breeze has passed, and we’ve been basking in April’s blossoming beauty. Tables (and sometimes office desks) have been relocated outdoors to a sunnier spot. Our first lunch in the courtyard felt a like a little slice of the south of France.

Last week’s Spring Weekender was a joyous collection of talented local craftspeople, fabulous food, and family fun. Thank you to everyone who came along! It came at the end of a busy week which featured our annual organic inspection and a gathering of some of the finest growers and foresters in the county – coordinated by The Forest for Cornwall team.

Our last few school visits rounded off an amazing spring term. Lucy’s recent blog post provides a taste of what the children got up to. Visits return again soon for summer term, with only a few available dates remaining.

Yesterday we hosted the first ‘Day at Nancarrow’ workshop. Guests spent the day learning about preparing and cooking Hogget – 1 year old sheep that would have traditionally graced the Easter table. Hogget is far superior and seasonal than the new season (concentrate fed) or New Zealand lamb that supermarkets try to tempt us with, nowadays. We’ll be hosting a lunch on Good Friday with our organic hogget taking centre stage, and anticipate it featuring on lunch and supper menus throughout spring, alongside our beef and homegrown veg. We picked the first of our asparagus this week signalling an exciting shift in the garden and up and coming menus. Summer is on it’s way.
