Written in the aftermath of yet another storm. This one passed north of Cornwall but triggered a tornado that caused havoc in Newquay, Cubert and Holywell. The cattle out on the headland at Penhale were luckily unscathed, unlike some of the nearby buildings and static caravans that bore the brunt.
The large tarpaulin (which is killing off the grass in preparation for 1,200 asparagus crowns arriving next month) fortuitously avoided the strongest gusts and just about survived, weighed down by dozens of old tyres from Pete’s old silage clamp.
The month ahead will be a busy one preparing the new perennial garden. Hedge planting days have been booked in the diary with our team, and a local school will help plant the adjacent new fruit orchard as part of their school visit in a few weeks. Last night was another reminder of the importance of shelter when growing food in our increasingly stormy climate.
Our maintenance closure is almost complete, and we will be reopening next Friday (31st) with faster broadband, a more level courtyard, a fresh lick of paint and some additions to the woodfired kitchen that will support our Courtyard Lunch plans in 2025. After the last few summers, we are due a good one and we intend to make the absolute most of it.
Our March Events Are Live!
The farm has already started coming back to life, and this really accelerates through February and March. This week the snowdrops appeared, we just took delivery of 6 piglets, and the first of our new lambs should arrive next week. By March there will be a spring in our step.
Although the equinox isn’t until the 20th, meteorologically, spring arrives on the 1st March, and the diary is set out to celebrate, with weekly Sunday Roasts (including Mother’s Day), Suppers, Farm Lunches and our month Feast.
A Day At Nancarrow
Before Christmas we launched a selection of experiences & workshops on the farm. We are pleased to announce that our first 5 dates are now on sale!
Learn to create your own Midsummer Feast, spend a day sharpening your skills with Pasta or Hogget, or take a ‘Dune Safari’ to Penhale and learn about meadows, grazing and native breeds. All these dates include either a Farm Lunch or Supper, and a stay on the farm can be added when booking too.
